They say a picture is a poem without words (Horace). This is exactly what Deanna Hurt captures in her photos of shelter animals looking for forever homes. It has been proven that great photos increase the chance of being adopted, and inspired by this Deanna Hurt took on her remarkable mission.

Putting her astonishing skills to work she takes incredible pictures of animals and sees the extraordinary in the ordinary. Her mission is simple: with the hope of increasing their visibility and, ultimately, getting them placed in loving new homes.

StinkDog’s tag line says it all, “We take stinkin' cute photos of your pet and capture their adorable personality”.

Deanna in her own words…

Who are you?

I’m Deanna Hurt, a pet photographer based in Denver, Colorado

What is your business?

My company is StinkDog Photos. I take animal portraits for personal and commercial clients.

How long have you been doing pet photography?

I’ve been a pet photographer for 5 years.

How did you get into this line of work?

When I got into photography, my family quickly grew tired of getting their photos taken so I started taking photos of the family dog. I was so busy learning exposure and composition that I forgot about my subject, and then even my dog got tired of me taking photos of him. He would sigh when he would see the camera and sometimes he would just get up and walk out of the room.

I had to learn how to make it fun for him so that he would stay, and let me take his photo. Sometime after that I saw a news story about a photographer that was helping shelter animals by taking really great photos of them so I started volunteering at a shelter.

My photos were far from great so it gave me a lot of time to practice my craft and spend time with the pets. During that time I really started to learn more about dogs and how to make them want to work with me. I think it shows in my photos, the animals are very engaged in the session and I think that sets me apart from other photographers.

Can you tell us what you are currently working on?

I'm still volunteering with the rescues trying to help homeless dogs and cats find forever homes by taking photos of them. I'm also working with Denver Mayor Michael Hancock and the Denver Animal Shelter on a monthly project. We bring the pet of the month from the shelter to the Mayor's office and take photos of them together and we all share it on social media to promote that animal and help it find a home. Working with the mayor has been great, he loves the animals and the pets get a lot of attention from him and the staff.
