4 Things to Know About The Invisible, Slimy, Biofilm In Your Dog's Bowl

Posted by Maureen Lake at

Lately, I’ve been wondering about the slimy junk I feel in my Doodles water bowls. That gross stuff is called Biofilm.

If you’re like me, you try to be careful and somewhat hygienic with your pets feeding bowls. I serve my doodles a combo of kibble and raw so I faithfully wash the food bowls after every meal (actually I have numerous replacement dishes just for feeding). Overkill? Maybe.

I’m not so adamant with Keira & Rosa’s water bowl, I must admit. I probably wash their bowl twice a week. Lately, I’ve been wondering about the slimy substance in their bowl, which is called Biofilm and wanted to learn more.

1) Biofilm slime is a collection of living and dead organic and inorganic material. Yes, dead and liveing material is making up the slimy yuck.

2) Biofilm is made of bacteria that sticks together to form the filmy substance. Some bacteria is good and helps fight off germs, but others- well, not so much.

3) The sticky slime is like a monster and is found on the bottom of your pet’s water bowl. Biofilm holds together like glue. That’s why it sticks to the surface and can be difficult to remove.

4) Biofilm can contain some good bacteria but it can also contain harmful bacteria. I'll let you be the decision maker on how often you want to wash your pet's bowl.

My little Rosa suffers from numerous ear infections. Obviously, there are many reasons why this may be so, but these dangerous biofilms have been found to cause middle-ear infections.

That’s not all!

There are numerous microbial infections caused by this nasty slime including urinary tract infections and bladder infections!

Many pet parents, myself included, are continuing to refill the water bowl over and over without washing it very often.

For best results, your bowl should go through the dishwasher on a hot cycle to clean out the biofilm. Be careful of the soap you use and never use Clorox on the bowls.

We’ve developed a fantastic product that removes biofilm in its tracks, and all you do is spray the bowl and rinse.

Our new product is 100% natural using Essential Oils and castile soap.
